The Dinner We Didn’t Plan to Write About
Chicago Meets Houston
What began as a Sunday evening spent catching up with friends and trying a new restaurant became an unexpected feature for COMPLETE.
Jordyn’s Royale
Signature cocktail.
Jordyn’s Steak & Seafood is not a large restaurant, and that is part of its appeal. The space feels inviting and intimate.
As the evening continued, we watched the dining room steadily fill. At one table, a group of beautiful women appeared to be catching up over a girls’ night. At another, a few gentlemen appeared to be filming a food review, positioning bright lights and cellphones at different angles to capture each dish. Nearby, guests gathered to celebrate a birthday.
Smiles, laughter, conversation and celebration gave the room an easy energy. Houston was clearly beginning to pay attention.
Although each table seemed to hold its own experience, the room never felt overwhelming. We could still enjoy our conversation, the old-school R&B and the intimacy of the setting.
Chicago had made its way to Houston.
Our waitress, Kennedy, was warm, kind and professional. She shared that Jordyn’s is a Chicago-based restaurant and guided us through the menu, offering a few of her favorite recommendations. When it came to drinks, she did not miss a beat, naming several ways each cocktail could be crafted to suit our tastes.
Soon, plates began arriving, and the fried calamari quickly became a table favorite. The jerk shrimp deviled eggs were spot-on and even inspired a playful suggestion from our group: fry the deviled eggs, then top them with that flavorful jerk shrimp. Whether the idea ever makes the menu remains to be seen. The dish was already worth ordering exactly as it was.
Soon, steaks and red snapper filled the table. One of our friends is a chef, so his reaction carried a little extra weight. His wife explained that when he finishes everything on his plate and calls it delicious, that is high praise. He did both.
The rest of the table agreed.
The warmth and hospitality continued as we left the dinner table and decided to extend our evening with a few more drinks. On the way to the bar, a member of the staff offered his hand to help me down the short set of steps. It was a simple gesture that did not go unnoticed.
At the bar, we met Precious, a bartender who knew her craft and how to engage a crowd. Her bubbly, genuine personality made the experience feel personal, and Christina joined in, too. Together, they created lighthearted moments filled with laughter.
Nothing felt forced. From dinner through our final drinks, we genuinely felt cared for.
It was then, while sitting at the bar, that I finally reached for my phone and captured the evening’s only photograph: Jordyn’s Royale. That image marked the moment COMPLETE realized dinner had become a story.
I usually take pictures when visiting a new restaurant, just in case inspiration strikes. This time, I chose to stay in the moment. The image became the only physical proof of the evening, but it was hardly the only thing that remained. Jordyn’s left an impression that lingered long after we walked out the door. We did not need photographs of every moment to remember how the experience made us feel.
We came to Jordyn’s Steak & Seafood expecting Sunday dinner with friends and left knowing we would return.
Some places ask to be noticed. Others simply give you a reason to pay attention.
Jordyn’s Steak & Seafood did exactly that.
